Chrono

Chronograph is an electronic measuring device designed to measure muzzle velocity, energy, and rate of fire for airsoft (or other) projectiles. It is used to check the performance of replicas before a game, during tuning or upgrading, or when testing new parts and their effect on the overall setup. Simply put, every moderately experienced airsofter should own a chrono. Don’t have one yet? That’s a mistake—but an easy one to fix! Just take a look at our selection here.

How does it work?

The chronograph measures the time it takes for a BB to pass between two sensors inside its housing. From that, it calculates the muzzle velocity in meters per second (m/s) or feet per second (FPS). Some models also automatically calculate the energy in Joules if you input the BB weight.

Use in airsoft

  • Performance check: Ensures the replica complies with game rules (e.g. 1.5–1.7 J limit for assault rifles).
  • Gun tuning: Compares the effects of part changes (spring, barrel, air seal components) on performance.
  • Problem diagnosis: A performance drop may indicate air leaks or worn parts.

Types of chronographs

  • Desktop chronos: Sturdy units for measuring various projectile types (BBs, arrows, pellets).
  • Compact chrono (e.g. Acetech AC6000): Ideal for personal use and frequent testing on the field.
  • Bluetooth chrono: Enables connection to a mobile app, data logging, and performance analysis (e.g. AC6000 MKIII BT).

Tips for accurate measurement

  • Always measure with BBs of known weight (usually 0.20 g), unless your chrono does automatic energy calculations.
  • Place the chronograph on a stable surface and shoot straight into the sensing area from a short distance.
  • Take multiple readings for accurate averages (at least 3 shots).
  • After measuring gas guns, clean and maintain the sensors according to the manual.

No chrono, no game!

Every serious player or game organizer should have access to a quality chronograph. It ensures player safety, fair gameplay, and protects against overpowered replicas.
