Muzzle Brake

Muzzle brake is an attachment mounted on the muzzle of a firearm, designed to reduce recoil when shooting. It works by redirecting some of the gases sideways or backward, which decreases the amount of force the recoil exerts on the firearm and shooter. Airsoft replicas are of course also available on our webshop.

Difference between flash hider, compensator, and muzzle brake

  • Flash hider:
Primarily designed to reduce muzzle flash during firing. In airsoft, it mostly serves an aesthetic or decorative function.

  • Compensator:
Redirects gases vertically or sideways to reduce muzzle rise and speed up target reacquisition. Often used in competitive shooting.

  • Muzzle brake:
Redirects gases sideways or backward to reduce recoil. Improves comfort when shooting higher calibers but also increases noise for bystanders.

Muzzle brake in practice

Muzzle brakes are used especially on rifles with higher power output—such as those chambered in 7.62 NATO, .308 Win, or .338 Lapua Magnum. They are also popular in competitive shooting (e.g., IPSC Rifle), where they help control rapid double taps. In airsoft, they are mainly used for their aesthetic function or may serve as adapters for quick-detach suppressors.

Advantages of muzzle brakes:

  • Reduces recoil and improves weapon handling
  • Enhances shooting comfort, especially with powerful calibers
  • Speeds up sight picture recovery

Disadvantages of muzzle brakes:

  • Increases noise for both the shooter and nearby people
  • Amplifies flash and side pressure
  • Not suitable for use in confined spaces
